Down And Out In The Magic Kingdom.

“Whuffie has replaced money, providing a motivation for people to do useful and creative things. A person’s Whuffie is a general measurement of his or her overall reputation, and Whuffie is lost and gained according to a person’s favorable or unfavorable actions. The question is, who determines which actions are favorable or unfavorable? In Down and Out, the answer is public opinion. Rudely pushing past someone on the sidewalk will definitely lose you points from them (and possibly bystanders who saw you), while composing a much-loved symphony will earn you Whuffie from everyone who enjoyed it.” - You can’t eat Whuffie (but it’s getting harder to eat without it) | ::HorsePigCow:: marketing uncommon (via fjgruber)

In 2003 I pondered the whereabouts of promised eyeglass computer screens, suspecting that perhaps the military had gobbled them up, and then in October of last year I mentioned poorly named Scaler’s “Teleglasses” and Sony’s “Glasstron” low rez $500 offerings. I now give you “MyVu”: full VGA at $300 to $200. The pairing with iPod’s makes perfect sense (the wee screens are exasperating.). However, this video ad/info blurb lacks appeal for me. Style wise the “Crystal” strikes me as a kid’s toy. Why not apply the technology to any existing sun-glass style to appeal to the masses so one could watch JFK on their Jackie-Os? (via wired ad)

“Being accustomed to a provision naturally leads the human heart to consider that provision an entitlement.” - Jonah Goldberg - also: “People ask, “Why is there poverty in the world?” It’s a silly question. Poverty is the default human condition. It is the factory preset of this mortal coil. As individuals and as a species, we are born naked and penniless, bereft of skills or possessions.” (via hilker) Also: A recent World Bank study found that a nation’s wealth resides in its “intangible capital” — its laws, institutions, skills, smarts and cultural assumptions. “Natural capital” (minerals, croplands, etc.) and “produced capital” (factories, roads, and so on) account for less than a quarter of the planet’s wealth. In America, intangible capital — the stuff in our heads, our hearts, and our books — accounts for 82 percent of our wealth. (via sds) Which is why the concept of Whuffie intrigues me.
